LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Hello again everyone! Yes, I know it's been a while since
my last email. I appreciate the inquiries from some of you who
were concerned about my "silence". I've been working very
hard on many projects this summer, plus I've tried to take some
time off.

I'm officially placing the Quit Smoking Report on the following
schedule: The Quit Smoking Report will go out on the first and
third Tuesday of each month. I may increase the frequency
depending on your requests or if my schedule will allow it. But
I will be sending QSR on a much more regular schedule now!

One bit of exciting news, at least for QuitSmoking.com,
is the introduction of our secure shopping cart. Now, shopping
and purchasing products at QuitSmoking.com is much
easier with our shopping cart.

If you find a product you want, just click the button that says
"Add to Your Shopping Cart". The products you choose are
automatically placed in your virtual shopping cart. You may
add or remove more products until you are ready to "check
out" or simply quit. If you decide to make a purchase, just
click the button that says "Go to Checkout Now" and you
can place your order.

We also now have secure ordering. Your credit card
information will be kept away from prying eyes throughout
the entire transaction, so you can be certain your
order is safe.

Please give our shopping cart a try. Go to
http://www.quitsmoking.com and try it out. Let us know how we can
improve it. Hey, you can even place an order! ;-)

FEATURED PRODUCT: One Step at a Time
http://www.quitsmoking.com/onestep.htm

One Step at a Time is a set of four filters that allow you to
gradually reduce the amount of tar and nicotine you take in when
you puff on your cigarettes.

When you smoke, simply place your cigarette into the filter. The
filter is very small and will not be very noticeable as you smoke.
The first filter reduces up to 25% of the tar and nicotine. Use
it for one to two weeks. Your body will begin adjusting to the
lower levels of addictive chemicals. Next, begin using the
second filter. It reduces up to 50% of the tar and nicotine in
your cigarettes. After one to two weeks, use the third filter.
It reduces up to 70% of the tar and nicotine. Finally, use the
fourth filter. It reduces your tar and nicotine intake by up to 90%.

The final step for you is to quit smoking completely. By
gradually reducing the addictive chemicals in your cigarettes,
you may find that quitting becomes a whole lot easier.

You can see and purchase the One Step at a Time filters on our
web site. Go to http://www.quitsmoking.com/onestep.htm for
more information.

ARTICLE: What are You Quitting For?

Have you ever asked yourself what you are quitting for? Why is
it that you are quitting smoking?

Are you quitting for your health? Your doctor? Your family?
Your pocketbook?

What's that? You don't really know for sure why you are
quitting? I hope you DO know why you are quitting. Every
smoker should have a reason for quitting. You may have some
vague thoughts in your mind that you are quitting because "it's
bad for me" or because "my wife wants me to."

I'm here to tell you today to get CLEAR in your mind EXACTLY why
you are quitting.

Yes, you know smoking is bad for you. But that never stopped you
from smoking before, did it? You knew you could save money,
smell better, feel better, etc., etc. if you quit smoking, but
you didn't quit. Why not? Perhaps you didn't truly give yourself
enough clearly defined reasons for quitting.

Here's a quick exercise that I'd like you to complete: Grab a
piece of paper and pencil, and along the left side of the page
write down a reason why you want to quit smoking. Skip down
a few lines and write down another reason, and so on, until
you've got five reasons. What are you quitting for? Health,
wealth, smellth? (Yeah, I just made that up but it rhymes).

Now, below each reason, write down the BENEFITS of this reason.
Write as many as you can think of. Be very descriptive.

For example:

Reason: Smell better
Benefits: People will enjoy being around me more often. I can
get more dates. I won't offend my clients. I can get a better job.

Reason: Feel better
Benefits: Feeling better is its on benefit. If I feel better I
can do more and better work. I can stop taking so much medicine.
I can save money by not having to go to my doctor all the time.
I'll have more energy. Getting up in the morning will be so much
easier.

You see? Do this for all five of YOUR reasons. Come up with as
many benefits as you can.

The last step is to take these benefits and turn them into what I
call "reality cards." A reality card is an index card on which
you write statements of "fact." Take the benefits you've written
down and turn them into statements of fact. Write these
statements of fact on index cards.

For example:

The benefit "I can get a better job" becomes "I have a better job
because I quit smoking." The benefit "I'll have more energy"
becomes "Ever since I quit smoking I have incredible amounts of
energy!"

Write the statements of fact as exciting, motivating messages to
yourself. Even though you haven't yet quit smoking, I call these
"statements of fact" because they are stated as if you already
achieved the goal and attained the benefit of the goal. Put one
statement of fact on each index card. Read your "reality cards"
at least three times per day. Also, you should read them
whenever you get a craving to smoke. Use a rubberband
to attach the cards to your pack of cigarettes. That way you'll
see and read them whenever you want to smoke.

Make sure you know what you are quitting for and you'll find it
much easier to resists your next craving.

SMOKERS' STORIES

Larry Clott (lclott@turbonet.com) writes

Let me share my mother's method [for quitting]. She was
diagnosed with numerous smoking related diseases. Mayo
clinic gave her a maximum of 10 years to continue living.
The fright was so severe that she stopped immediately and never
again started. Fortunately for her, she outlived that prognoses
by 2 years and died at age 65 just 2 weeks ago - but not a pretty
death. The last 10 years was maintained with 24 hour/per on
oxygen with regulare treatments. She spent her last 2 weeks
choking to death. Her breathing rate eventually dropped to
1-2 breaths per minute. What a way to quit smoking!

My Quitting Experiences

My first was when I was pregnant with my second child. I wanted
to nurse and just quit. That lasted about a year. I gave my
husband a surprise birthday and to "just one". By the way that
child is now almost 24 and a mother!! And since getting pregnant
again is now biologically impossible I guess I must come up with
another method!!

I don't really know how many times I have tried to quit since
then. I usually am fine for about a month and then something
goes on self destruct. The last time I tried was earlier this
year, January 9th to be exact. It was late and I was working at
my computer and smoking as usual. In the back of my mind
quitting is always there in its little compartment. I suddenly
realized that there were only 3 or 4 cigarettes left. I smoked
them during the course of a couple of hours and said to myself
"okay, that's it". The next morning I awoke and I felt great. I
continued to feel great for more than a month. I really thought
that this was it. I felt I had really kicked it. When I smelled
smoke it really did stink. I was calm and resolved. I honestly
cannot remember why I started again becuase in hindsight I
probably could have weathered whatever it was that was
happening. HABIT

I have tried through the years Cigarrest which was available
years ago in any large discount drug store, Nicorette, the patch.
I spoke to my doctor recently and she prescribed Wellbutrin
recently which she said reduces cravings even though it is an
antidepressant. Well I've been taking it for about 2 weeks and
notice no change.

Someone said to me that maybe you are not ready to quit yet.
I really don't know what that means. Do I have to be dead to
be ready!!

Well, that appears to be it. Thanks for listening. Looking
forward to hearing from you.

Hi,

I just read you first letter to me since I signed on.

Bit of history.

I quit smoking on May13, 1997. Just over a year ago. I had
arrived at a point where I no longer enjoyed smoking. In fact,
it bacame an effort to smoke. the problem washow to
overcome the need for nicotine. It was actually not a
problem because it was now a habit and not an addiction.

I kept reminding myself about how I wanted to quit by taking
deeeeeeep breaths. With each deep breath I found myself
able to take deeper breaths, something I had not been able to
do for years.

Even after having stopped fpr more than a year, I still find
myself, at time wanting to smoke. It must be true that you
never really quit. You just spend more time between
cigarettes. Hopefully, that next cigarette will not come.

I am sure that I will enjoy receiving your leters.

Looking forward to the next letter I remain

SMOBERLY,

DON

Michelle (Michgil@aol.com) writes:

Hi Fred,

The last time that I quit, I weaned myself. I set a goal
that every 2-3 days I would cut back by at least two
cigarettes until I was only smoking 2-3 per day for about
two weeks. Then I just told myself that I could let them go
all together and did. The first few days were tough, but I
kept praising myself and got through it.

It is important that people don't put themselves down if
they don't quite accomplish their goal. Any improvement
is progress, and smoking one less in any given day is progress.

Another important thing I learned this time, is that NOTHING
is worth picking them up again. You have to tell yourself
that you can deal with EVERYTHING WITHOUT THEM.
You don't need them.

This time I am using One Step at a Time [Fred's note: see info
in the Featured Product section above]. So far, I am smoking
about half of what I was. I have a ways to go yet, but am
making progress. I have noticed that alot of it is habit though
and am ordering the E-ZQuit program
[Fred's note again: see http://www.quitsmoking.com/ezquit.htm ]
to help me past that. I'm hoping that it will.

Hope to be talking to you again soon and telling you that
I am once again, and for good smoke free.

An added note to anyone that smokes and has children as
I do. My biggest motivator is that I don't want my son
smoking, and since he is getting older, the best way to keep
him from doing it, is the power of example. I believe that it is
tremendously powerful.

Thanks for your support.

Michelle
